On a good day, the atmosphere at Joy Beans offers enough incentive for anyone to reach for a mug and on a great day, when the scent of roasted beans permeates the air, it’s downright delectable.
Owned and operated by husband-and-wife team, Ben and Patty Glennon, Joy Beans has a number of things on the go.
The inspiration to enter the coffee business began when the couple took a backpacking trip around the world, visiting remote communities in coffee-growing regions.
“We decided to grab some backpacks, leave it all behind and travel the world, we had no idea the experiences and adventures we were going to encounter, but it was a decision that changed our lives,” says Ben.
“There are so many remote villages where families brew coffee grown on their own farms and where the local cafes serve their neighbours’ coffee beans, and we developed a love for this concept.”
“We visited numerous coffee farms, met the growers, tasted many cups of freshly roasted coffee and listened to countless stories about the lives and experiences of the people in these remote corners of the world,” says Ben.
“It was such an amazing experience that we wanted to bring a piece of it back to the Gold Coast and share it.”
The more Ben and Patty travelled, the more beautiful and inspiring places they found and after connecting with these communities and their people, the more they wanted to help.
“A percentage of our profits goes back to children’s charities located in coffee growing regions across the world including Mision Mexico, Beyond the Orphanage, Surfaid and Skip.”
Now, Joy Beans has a good thing brewing, supplying organic roasted coffee wholesale and retail, supporting charities they are passionate about and operating a boutique café in West Burleigh.
The café, the perfect location to put their roast beans to the test, offers a signature First Light café blend for milk-based drinks, as well as a selection of rotating Single Origins for black coffee and a vegetarian seasonal menu focusing on local ingredients.
“Our roasting process brings out the unique flavour of each bean from each country, and we source the best organic and Fairtrade coffee from around the world,” says Ben.
“It’s important that we ensure every bean we use is produced and traded responsibly, which is beneficial for the farmers, the environment and consumers.
“So, with every cup you enjoy at Joy Beans, you can rest assured knowing the people growing and picking your coffee beans are happy and fairly treated, and you are improving the lives of children in need.”
